Every landscape is calling for its people. On this Journey, we spend time with the indigenous Sami and their reindeer, on waterfall hikes in the mountains discussing access, herding, and grazing, and with flocks of sheep and their shepherds (and dogs) experiencing municipal and ski resort regenerative grazing practices. We will discuss deep, grassroots community movements and spend time with the local and extended global community around a pastoral equinox campfire for peace.
We will focus on experiences and conversations around humans, wildlife, and livestock and their integral connections as a part of nature. We look at the inclusion of humans within ecology and building self-reliant groups of people sharing responsibility for access and management of their land. Using the language of Holistic Management and appropriate legal agreements, these groups aspire to thrive alongside each other as a part of nature. Drawing from historical and archeological understanding, we will explore the impact of humans on animal migration prior to agriculture and how this contributes – and can be part of the solution – to current conflicts and discussions between the indigenous Sami people and local mountain farmers. We explore the global conversation around how pastoral enterprises – including reindeer – are a fundamental part of the landscape and in creating the desired future resource base needed to sustain nature and humans as a piece of this natural landscape.

Our Hosts
As a regional hub of the Savory Global Network, Fjällbete is the learning site for Holistic Management Sverige, the Savory Hub in Sweden. At Fjällbete, the mission is to close the gap between the land and its people, to restore laghum, an ancient Swedish word meaning ‘what works for everybody’. Laghum expresses the interdependence between the land, the managers of the ground, and the people kept alive by adequately managed landscapes. Fjällbete is facilitating a Nordic network for regenerative agriculture and helping people explore their ‘caring capacity' as farmers and community builders. The goal is for community collaboration to naturally trigger expansion that is healing to the land and puts animals back at the center of the regeneration process.

Price is per person, double occupancy. If you would like single occupancy accommodations, please make this request via email to journeys@savory.global and expect to spend USD $300 in addition to the Journey cost. Please be aware single accommodations may be limited. International airfare to/from Trondheim Airport (TRD) is not included.

Travel Logistics
This itinerary is a journey in the truest sense; travelers should be flexible, keep an open mind, be in good health and expect to walk short to medium distances over varying terrain and mountain trails. There are options for those who prefer or are not able to take longer hikes. Roads will often be mountainous and can be unpaved with time spent in 4x4 vehicles. Every day in the mountains during the end of the summer season is unique, with its own blend of weather, be it rain or shine, cold or warm. Exactly what you want from the mountains!
Lodging
Our lodging during this journey is beautiful in its simplicity. Most of our stay will be spent at Anariset Fjällgård guest house situated in the small, 30 inhabitant mountain village of Vallbo. This indigenous, Sami owned guest house is in the middle of Vålådalens nature reserve and is the center for many of the hiking trails into the nearby mountains.
Food
Our meals – with as much locally sourced food as possible – are prepared by chefs belonging to this landscape, its people, and its animals.
